Summary
Abstract
The MaStER_G project aims to establish an international Master Study Program (MSP) in Environmental Geotechnics and Geohazards, fully aligned with the Strategic Framework for European Cooperation in Education and Training (ET 2030). Through the joint effort of partner institutions with diverse backgrounds, the project reinforces the European Higher Education Area in the environmental and geohazard sectors of civil engineering. The MSP will serve as a platform for educational, professional, and personal development of both academic staff and students, thereby advancing all five strategic priorities of the ET 2030 framework. The MaStER_G consortium brings together six institutions from five partner universities. The institutions enrich the consortium through their regional expertise in geotechnical hazards, environmental sustainability and climate-related risk management. Together, they form a comprehensive academic network that bridges EU and non-EU regions, ensuring transnational exchange of knowledge, mobility of students and staff, and multidisciplinary cooperation in environmental geotechnics and geohazard risk reduction. The proposed MSP addresses key environmental and geotechnical challenges by aligning its content with the European Green Deal. It focuses on the geotechnical implications of climate change, including coastal erosion, slope instability and infrastructure vulnerability under extreme climatic events, floods and seismicity. The program builds industry partnerships, establishes structured mobility pathways, and employs joint quality assurance mechanisms that directly reinforce European higher education’s global competitiveness. Students will benefit from exposure to cutting-edge research, international study environments, and multi-disciplinary problem-solving, significantly improving their readiness for international careers in environmental and civil engineering sectors. The project exemplifies how cross-continental collaboration can drive academic excellence and resilience in the face of global environmental challenges. By strengthening transnational collaboration, advancing educational equity and preparing future professionals to address critical environmental and geotechnical challenges, MaStER_G represents a transformative model for international higher education that serves both European strategic priorities and global sustainability goals.
